David Roy Ownbey passed away in his sleep on December 19, 2025, at Ozark Nursing and Care Center.  David was born in Asheville, NC to Joe and Mary Ownbey on August 1, 1943.  David graduated from Central High School in Springfield, MO in 1961. He then entered the Air Force from 1961 to 1965 and was stationed in Denver, Colorado.

 

David retired from Herc Equipment Rental, formerly Knopke Brothers Contractors Supply where he was a Mechanic.

 

David was a member of the Springfield, MO Vette Set Corvette Club until approximately 1985. He then built a GT 1 Corvette to race with the Sports Car Club of America.  While a member of SCCA, he road raced at: Hallett, OK, Lake Afton, KS, Topeka, KS, Gateway Granite City, IL, and Memphis, TN. After wrecking his Corvette at Topeka in 1993, he purchased a motor home and camera.  David proceeded to film races at these tracks until 2009. At the same time, he was also a Tech Inspector at the SCCA races that both he and Vicki attended.

 

David and Vicki were married in 2015 at their home in Springfield, MO.  He and Vicki continued to attend SCCA races in the Midwest Division until 2019. From 2010 until 2018 they enjoyed traveling to the panhandle of Florida for a few weeks each fall accompanied by friends Ron and Monica Shaw in their motor homes.

 

David is survived by his wife, Vicki Jarecke; sister, Carolyn Anderson; stepson, Dennis (Susan) Jarecke; sister-in-law, Thelma Scrivner; brother-in-law, Max (Tina) Rodgers; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

 

David was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Mary Ownbey (Springfield, MO) and brother-in-laws, Bob Anderson (Wenatchee, WA) and Dee Scrivner (St. Charles, MO).

 

At David’s request his body has been cremated, but there will be a Celebration of Life at a future date.

In lieu of flowers it is asked that you contribute to your favorite charity or the Spokane Mounted Patrol which David’s niece is a major part of. The website is www.spokanemountedpatrol.org.
